Cinema 4D's New Cloner Distribution Types Are Worth Learning Even If You Use Houdini

Cinema 4D 2026.3 added three new distribution types to the Cloner object: UV Projection, Rivet and Edge. If you do not touch Cinema 4D, it is still worth understanding what these do, because the underlying ideas show up in every serious procedural motion graphics tool eventually.

UV Projection clones along a surface's UV map rather than its raw geometry, which matters the moment you need instances to follow a texture's logic rather than the mesh's topology, think patterns that need to read correctly on a stretched or deformed surface. Rivet locks a clone's position and orientation to a specific point on an animated mesh, the kind of thing you reach for when something needs to travel with a moving character or object without manually keyframing it. Edge distribution scatters along mesh edges specifically, useful for anything that needs to trace a shape's outline rather than fill its surface.

None of these are new concepts to Houdini users, who have had comparable scattering controls for years through VEX and VOPs. What matters is that Maxon is bringing that level of procedural control into a more artist-friendly, node-light workflow. If your team has been reaching for Houdini purely for scattering logic like this, it is worth checking whether Cinema 4D's simpler interface now covers the case.
