Claude Arrives in Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as a Sidebar That Asks First

ZKO blog tile: AI

Anthropic announced Claude for Google Workspace on 6 October 2026. It adds Claude to Google Docs, Sheets and Slides as a sidebar next to the file you have open, where it can read the document, see your selection and edit it directly. It is in public beta on all paid Claude plans.

The detail we like most is the default behaviour. In "Ask before edits" mode every change appears as an approval card with a short summary, and Claude waits for you. A second mode, "Accept all edits", lets it finish the job and apply everything without stopping. Most people will want the first mode until they trust a particular task.

Each app gets a different set of tricks. In Docs it fixes sentences, restyles headings and proposes larger rewrites as suggestion cards you can apply or dismiss. In Sheets it writes formulas, builds pivot tables and native charts, adds tabs, and can run data cleaning or joins in Python and write the results back.

Slides is the one that matters most to a design studio. Claude builds slides from your deck's own layouts and themes, then flags overlapping or off-slide elements and hard-to-read text. That is a sensible job for an assistant, because it is checking against rules your template already holds rather than inventing a look.

There is also a connectors beta that lets you create and edit Google files from a Claude chat, including by pasting a file link. Connector access follows your existing Google sharing permissions, so it cannot reach files the person asking could not already open.

For teams, an owner or primary owner has to enable the connectors on Team and Enterprise plans. Enterprise controls such as the Compliance API, customer-managed encryption keys and OpenTelemetry audit export also apply to the add-on. Admins can deploy it to a domain or selected groups from the Google Admin console.

Our view: the approval-card pattern is the right way to put an AI model inside a shared document. It keeps the person in charge of the file, and it makes the assistant's work easy to review in the same place you already collaborate.
