Every 3D Tool Now Speaks Gaussian Splats, Which Is the Real Story

Gaussian splatting has been the next big thing in 3D capture for a couple of years now. The actual news in 2026 is less exciting and more useful: it stopped being a research curiosity and became a format every major tool speaks.
Unreal Engine, Unity, Nerfstudio, Polycam, Luma AI, Volinga and Kiri Engine all now support splat scenes in some form. That is the part worth paying attention to, more than any single quality improvement. A capture technique is only as useful as the pipeline around it, and for a long time splats were brilliant to look at and painful to actually use: locked into one viewer, hard to export, harder still to bring into a real production pipeline alongside meshes and traditional assets.
Broad tool support changes the calculation for real work. A site scan captured as a splat can now plausibly travel from capture app to engine to final render without a bespoke conversion step built for one project. That is what turns a format from a demo reel trick into something you can actually plan a production schedule around.
If you scanned a location as a splat eighteen months ago and shelved it because nothing downstream could use it properly, it is worth pulling back out. The tooling has caught up to the capture.
