GitHub Just Reversed Its Own Copilot Billing Restrictions

GitHub is reopening credit card and PayPal self serve signups for Copilot Business and Enterprise from 1 September 2026, reversing a restriction it had put in place on those plans, announced 28 August 2026.

Billing policy reversals do not usually make interesting reading, but this one is a useful data point on how fast enterprise AI tooling is still moving its own goalposts. Restricting self serve signup for business tiers is normally a sign a vendor wants more control over who is buying: sales led onboarding, closer account management, fewer support surprises. Walking that back within what looks like a matter of months suggests the friction cost more in lost signups than it saved in support overhead.

For any studio or team choosing AI coding tools right now, the underlying lesson is not about GitHub specifically. It is that the commercial terms around these tools are still being actively rewritten, sometimes in both directions within the same quarter. Locking a workflow tightly to one vendor's current pricing and access model is a riskier bet than it looks, because the model underneath it is not settled yet.

We keep our own tooling choices loosely coupled for exactly this reason. Not because any one vendor is untrustworthy, but because the ground is still moving.
