GitHub Copilot's New Customize Tab Admits Its Extensibility Got Messy

GitHub has made a single Customize tab generally available in the Copilot app, bringing MCP servers, plugins, skills, and canvases into one place with featured and trending browsing, shipped 25 August 2026.

That this needed fixing is the actual story. Copilot's extensibility model grew fast over the last year or so: MCP servers for connecting external tools, plugins, custom skills, canvases for structured output, each shipped as its own feature with its own settings screen. Useful individually, increasingly hard to discover as a set. A developer who wanted to know what was actually available to them had to know which of four different menus to check.

A single browsable tab is not a technical achievement. It is a maintenance one, an admission that a fast moving extensibility surface needs curation as much as it needs new capability, or the newest features quietly become the ones nobody finds.

We have hit a version of this ourselves rolling out AI tooling internally: the tool that gets used is rarely the most powerful one, it is the one someone can actually find when they need it. A trending and featured view does more for adoption than another five percent of raw capability ever will.
