IlluGen 2.0 Adds GPU Particles and Destruction, Making It a Real-Time VFX Workbench

JangaFX describes IlluGen as a tool for generating assets for real-time VFX and technical artists, covering things like tiling noise, flowmaps, VFX meshes and flipbooks. Version 2.0, covered in CG Channel's October roundup, adds a GPU particle system, initial destruction tools with Fracture, Boolean, Extrude, Revolve and Ribbon nodes, new Unreal Engine export options and a geometry atlas.

The shift is that it now makes the moving parts, not just the textures. A particle system on the GPU means you can see the effect at real-time speed while you author it, and destruction nodes mean a smashed object can be prepared in the same place as the smoke that goes with it.

Pricing, per CG Channel, is $20 a month for indie subscriptions and $1,600 for a studio node-locked perpetual licence. It runs on Windows 10 or later, RHEL 9 or later and macOS 15.0 or later.

Our take: the value of tools like this is consistency. When particles, flipbooks and meshes come from one workbench, the effect library looks like a family rather than a pile of downloads. If you build real-time scenes, run one of your existing effects through it and compare how long the old route took.
