Luma's Capture App Turns an iPhone Into a Gaussian Splat Studio

ZKO blog tile: 3D

Luma's Capture app has quietly become one of the fastest ways to get a usable 3D Gaussian splat out of a real object, and it needs nothing more exotic than an iPhone 11 or newer. Walk around a product, a room or an outdoor scene with the app open, upload the capture, and Luma's cloud pipeline hands back a splat scene with reflections and lighting baked in, ready to export as a NeRF or Gaussian Splat into Unreal, Unity, Blender or a web viewer.

What used to need a photogrammetry rig, careful lighting and a few hours of processing now takes a phone and a coffee break. That changes the calculation for when 3D capture is worth doing at all. A quick product scan for an internal pitch, previously not worth the setup time, is now cheap enough to do on the spot.

The catch is quality still tracks effort. A careful, slow walk around an object with consistent lighting produces a noticeably cleaner splat than a rushed pass, and reflective or transparent surfaces still confuse it the way they confuse most capture methods. Treat it as a fast first pass rather than a replacement for a proper scan when the final output actually needs to hold up close.
