Why We Build a Materials Board Before We Open a 3D Render

Before anyone at ZKO opens a 3D package, we build a materials board. Not a mood board of inspiration images pulled from elsewhere, but a specific, numbered set of the actual finishes going into the space: this stone, this timber stain, this brass, this exact shade of paint, each one photographed or scanned under consistent light.
We learned to insist on this the hard way, on a wine cellar project in Marlow where the brief called for reclaimed oak racking against dark stone flooring. Early test renders looked convincing on screen and wrong in person, because we had picked digital wood and stone materials that read correctly individually but fought each other under the render engine's default lighting. The client's own materials, photographed together on site, told a completely different colour story than the material library defaults we had started with.
Now the materials board comes before anything else. We photograph or scan every finish in the same lighting rig, lay them out together, and check that the palette holds as a set before a single polygon gets textured. It catches problems that are invisible in isolation: a warm oak that looks fine against a swatch of pale stone but curdles against the actual dark limestone specified for a hallway, a brass fitting that reads gold in a materials library and greenish under a designer's chosen colour temperature.
It also changes conversations with clients. Instead of approving a finished render and then asking for a paint colour to be adjusted, which means re rendering a full scene, clients sign off on the materials board first. Changes at that stage cost us an afternoon. Changes after a full render is built cost days, because colour and material choices touch every surface in a scene, not just the one someone wants changed.
The render is where a space comes to life, but the materials board is where accuracy either gets locked in or gets lost. We would rather spend the extra afternoon before the render than explain afterwards why the stone does not match the sample sitting on the client's desk.
