Mistral Raises 3 Billion Euros in Europe's Largest Ever Private Tech Round

Mistral AI: announcing its record euro3bn Series D funding round

Mistral AI announced on 8 September that it has closed a 3 billion euro Series D funding round at a post money valuation above 21 billion euros, the largest single equity round ever raised by a European technology company. The round was led by Samsung Electronics, with Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity as co leads, and backers including Salesforce Ventures, Nvidia and ASML.

The Paris based company, three years old this year, says it now serves more than 125 enterprise clients including Airbus and HSBC, and operates in 20 countries. The funds are earmarked for frontier model research, more training compute, and faster international expansion, according to Mistral's own announcement.

What makes the round notable beyond its size is the framing. Mistral has built its identity around sovereign, open weight AI: models that governments and large European enterprises can run on their own infrastructure rather than depending entirely on American or Chinese labs. Samsung leading the round, alongside Nvidia as an investor, reads as a bet that this positioning has commercial legs, not just political appeal.

There is a tension worth naming, too. Mistral's pitch rests on independence from the big US labs, yet its cap table now includes Nvidia, whose GPUs underpin nearly every frontier model regardless of who trains it, and Salesforce, an American enterprise software giant. Sovereignty in AI increasingly means sovereignty over the model weights and where inference runs, not full independence from the supply chain underneath.

For European clients we work with, and we have a few, the practical upshot is more choice. A credible, well funded alternative to OpenAI and Google that can be procured and run inside EU data protection rules is genuinely useful when a client's legal team asks where their data goes. That question comes up more often than it used to.
