NVIDIA's DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction Is Coming to Blender's Viewport

NVIDIA has shipped DLSS 4.5 Ray Reconstruction, a second generation transformer model that NVIDIA says carries 35 percent more compute capacity than its predecessor. The update rolled out to RTX graphics cards at Gamescom on 25 August 2026, and it targets the noisy, blotchy look that path traced games can get when ray counts are low.
More interesting for us: NVIDIA confirmed the same denoiser is coming to Blender as a new option inside Cycles, landing in Blender 5.3 this autumn. That puts a real time, AI assisted denoiser directly in the viewport for anyone modelling or lighting a scene, not just game studios chasing frame rates.
We render a lot of product and architectural work in Cycles at ZKO, and viewport noise is one of the everyday costs of working at speed. A path traced preview that clears up in a fraction of the samples means less waiting between adjusting a light and trusting what you see. It will not replace a proper final render pass, but it should shorten the loop between "that looks close" and "that is right," which is most of what slows a lighting session down.
Worth flagging: Blender's own changelog has not caught up with this yet, so treat the autumn 5.3 date as NVIDIA's word until Blender confirms it directly. NVIDIA's transformer based Ray Reconstruction model has already reshaped how DLSS handles reflections and fine detail since it replaced the older CNN model, and a 35 percent jump in compute budget suggests it can hold onto more of that detail at lower sample counts too.
For studios choosing render engines, this also nudges the calculation. Cycles has spent the last few years catching up to real time engines like Unreal on speed, and a good denoiser closes a chunk of that gap without touching hardware.
