PlayStation Brings AI Upscaling to the Standard PS5 With QSSR

PlayStation: QSSR AI upscaling for PS5

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR, on 1 October 2026. It brings AI-guided upscaling to the standard PS5 for the first time, a feature previously limited to the PS5 Pro through PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR).

The reason it took until now is computational cost. PSSR analyses game images pixel by pixel and uses AI to upscale them with more detail and stability than conventional methods, but its demands made it impossible on the base console. QSSR is described as a new performance tier, born from Project Amethyst, Sony's AI graphics collaboration with AMD.

Sony credits two changes. The first is a streamlined neural network architecture, and the second is a hand-tuned implementation that maximises performance on PS5 hardware. Sony is clear that PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, but says QSSR delivers notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on the standard console.

The first two titles are Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games and Ghost of Yotei from Sucker Punch Productions. Both were patched on the day to offer QSSR as an additional graphics option. Insomniac's Mike Fitzgerald said it adds pixel-level clarity and stability to environments, while Sucker Punch's Jasmin Patry pointed to temporal stability that had not been possible on the base PS5 until now. QSSR will be offered to all PlayStation developers.

Why this matters outside games: real-time 3D keeps converging on the same trick. Render fewer pixels, then let a trained network rebuild the detail. We see the same logic in the browser and in real-time visualisation, where the cost of a full-resolution frame is the limit on how rich a scene can be.

Our takeaway is that upscaling is no longer an optional extra. It is becoming part of the rendering budget from the start, and any studio building interactive 3D should plan its frame budget around it.
