Unity 7.0 Alpha 1 Is Out, and It Is the First Editor Running on CoreCLR

ZKO blog tile: 3D

Unity made 7.0 Alpha 1 available through the Hub's pre-releases on 5 October 2026, alongside a long update on its scripting plans. The headline is that this is the first Editor powered by CoreCLR, with Mono removed. Unity is explicit that it is not recommended for production.

For now it targets C# 9 and .NET Standard 2.1. Support for C# 14 and .NET 10 is planned for the CoreCLR Editor, but Unity says it cannot commit to a public date yet. The stated priority for 7.0 is parity with Unity 6.7 LTS in functionality and stability, with performance work saved for the next 7.X LTS release next year.

The most useful detail is what has not improved yet. Unity has replaced domain reloads with a reload based on AssemblyLoadContext, but some progress-bar text still says "domain reload", and forum users report little iteration speedup in the alpha. Unity says further work is needed before the gains reach developers. The near-instant live code iteration demo is a long-term plan and is not part of 7.0.

Tooling is changing too. Unity uses the standard .NET debugger, with mixed-mode debugging on Windows, though a staff member said the edit-and-continue workflow is not currently set up to work correctly. Project generation, IDE tooling and compilation workflows are moving to MSBuild, and all platforms are heading to an updated IL2CPP with a .NET 10 based base class library, released as each platform is ready.

On the player side, the 6.7 alpha includes experimental CoreCLR desktop and iOS IL2CPP players. Both still use C# 9 and .NET Standard 2.1, and IL2CPP keeps the Boehm garbage collector for now.

What it means for us: we choose engines per brief, and nothing here changes a live project. It is worth tracking because a faster, more standard .NET foundation should make interactive 3D tooling less awkward for everyone.

If you work in Unity, treat Alpha 1 as a place to test your code against CoreCLR, not a place to ship.
