Vercel's Flat Rate CDN Admits Usage Based Pricing Scared People Off

Vercel now offers a flat rate CDN tier alongside its usual usage based bandwidth pricing, and the interesting part is not the price itself, it is what launching it admits. Usage based pricing makes perfect sense on a spreadsheet. It charges you for exactly what you use and nothing more. It also makes a launch day traffic spike or a single viral post feel like a small emergency, because nobody budgeting a client project wants to explain a surprise bill caused by success.
We have felt that exact anxiety on client sites where a campaign lands better than expected. A flat rate option removes the need to model worst case traffic before every launch, which matters more to how a studio actually plans work than the theoretical saving of paying only for average usage. Predictable cost lets you say yes to a big marketing push without a side conversation about hosting risk.
It will not suit everyone. A site with genuinely low, steady traffic probably still comes out ahead on pure usage pricing, and Vercel has not pretended otherwise by keeping both options live rather than forcing a migration. But the fact that a platform built its reputation partly on elegant usage based billing is now offering an escape from it says something about how much that unpredictability was actually costing customers in stress, not just in money.
