Vercel Shop Reaches General Availability as a Next.js Storefront for Shopify With Agent Tools Built In

Vercel and Shopify: Vercel Shop general availability

On 16 October Vercel announced that Vercel Shop, its open source Next.js storefront template for Shopify, is generally available. The pitch is that agents already shop on the web, but mostly through pages built for people and search engines, so a store should serve them properly.

Vercel Shop is built on Shopify's Hydrogen SDK, which gives access to a store's product catalogue, cart, order management, payments and checkout. Earlier this year the two companies said they would rebuild Hydrogen to work across JavaScript frameworks, and that rebuilt SDK is now generally available as well.

The agent features are the interesting part. Product pages are available as machine-readable content, including price, availability and options, so the same URL can serve a visual page to a person and plain product information to an agent. The template also embeds structured data and sitemaps for search and answer engines. Shopify co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol, which gives agents a standard way to search a catalogue, read details, check availability, build a cart and get a checkout link. Vercel Shop exposes these over MCP at the merchant's own domain.

There is also a shopping assistant in the same codebase as the storefront, powered by eve, and it shares a cart with the normal browsing experience. Vercel launched its merchandise store at vercel.store on the template.

What it means for a small studio building shops for clients: the commercial question is no longer only how a product page looks. It is whether an agent can read it. Clean structured data has been good practice for years, and it now has a second audience.

Our caution is that this is Vercel describing its own launch. The template is open source, which makes it easy to inspect, but results for a real catalogue will depend on how tidy its product data is. Before reaching for any new stack, we would get the existing product data clean, then see what an agent makes of it.
