We Built a Virtual Trade Show in 2020. Here's What's Still True About It

When COVID made physical trade shows impossible, Milwaukee needed another way to launch and demonstrate its tools to a global audience. Working alongside five agencies and partners at Invidar, we helped build a fully immersive 3D virtual world housing thousands of Milwaukee products, complete with animations, product videos and a custom designed frontend, that went on to host digital product launches and demonstrations in place of the physical events that couldn't happen.
It's worth revisiting a project like this a few years on, not for nostalgia, but because the assumptions behind it get tested differently once the original emergency has passed. The obvious question is whether a virtual expo hall still makes sense now that physical trade shows are back on the calendar. The honest answer is that the specific format, walking an avatar through a 3D hall past virtual booths, was always a product of its moment more than a permanent replacement for a physical show floor. Nobody was going to prefer navigating a virtual aisle to standing in front of a real tool.
What has held up is the underlying infrastructure decision, not the metaphor built on top of it. A single, centrally hosted environment holding a brand's entire product catalogue, built once and reusable for launch after launch, remains a genuinely useful thing to own regardless of whether the audience arrives through a literal 3D hallway or a simpler web interface. The hard part of a project like this was never the virtual architecture, it was building thousands of products, consistently rendered, into one system that could support repeated launches without starting from zero each time.
That's the part worth remembering when a client asks whether a big, format specific build like this is worth the investment for a single moment. The format that made headlines at launch, a 3D virtual world, was the least durable part of the project. The product catalogue infrastructure underneath it was the part that actually kept paying off, launch after launch, long after the specific reason it got built in the first place had passed. When we scope a project like this now, we try to separate those two questions from the start: what's built for this moment, and what's built to outlast it.
